20mph: Love Your Street!
The Time is Right Living Streets, together with our local activists, is launching a new campaign to push for default 20mph within individual local authorities wherever people live, work or play. 20mph speed limits have proven to reduce vehicle-related injuries and fatalities, improve air quality, cut carbon emissions, reduce noise, and encourage walking and cycling. We have started lobbying on a national level for policies that make it easier for local authorities to approve a 20mph speed limit. By working with our local contacts and groups we will be able to campaign effectively at a grassroots level to build support throughout the UK for 20mph limits. In January 2006 new DfT guidance came out (DfT circular 01/2006) allowing local authorities to implement 20mph speed limits across large areas without having to install new traffic calming measures. Since then, a growing number of local authorities have decided to adopt 20mph as the default speed in their area. The list now includes Leicester, Norwich, Oxford, Portsmouth, Newcastle, large areas of Bristol, and the London Borough of Islington. 20mph Campaign Packs Are Here!We have created 20 mph campaign packs for our local activists, with press releases, fact sheets, template letters to local authorities, and other materials. These are all available to download below. You can either download the documents as individual files or as one pdf. We believe that the time is right to put people first and make 20mph the norm in all our neighbourhoods. Please join us and get active where you live! If you have questions or want to find a local group to volunteer with, please contact Click on the link below to download the whole campaign pack in PDF format: Alternatively you can download the documents within the pack separately: 20mph Front Cover 20 mph campaign pack contents Dispelling Myths 20 mph Case Studies provide a glimpse of how three London living Streets groups successfully lobbied for 20mph in their boroughs.
